Creative Writing Support Tutor

For more than twenty-five years Art Angel has been at the forefront of supporting people who experience mental and emotional distress. Established during the move from wards and nurses to community-based services, Art Angel remains a place where all decisions are a product of informed, lived experience; a place where people come to make art, feeling safe to be themselves.

We are recruiting for a Creative Writing support tutor to assist the lead tutor in the running of our weekly Creative Writing group. This is a well-established vibrant, forward looking group who have clearly defined expectations and a creative approach to writing. We are looking for someone who is dynamic and will bring new ideas to the group, whilst remaining respectful of our approach. There is an expectation from our group members that they have opportunities to share their work with the wider public. A tutor who could support involvement in Art Angel exhibitions and in-house publications would be desirable. 

Tutors are there to gently guide, motivate and listen to participants and, as such, they must be excellent listeners and communicators, with an ability to work sensitively with individuals from a wide variety of backgrounds. Experience in participatory mental health arts projects is desirable, although we will give the successful applicant specialist training. Tutors are also expected to take part in the writing process and to be comfortable with sharing their responses to exercises with the group. The Support Tutor will also be responsible for using Zoom during the sessions to enable those who are unable to attend the workshops in-person to participate.

The Creative Writing group runs on a Friday afternoon, 1pm- 3pm. Tutors are required to be in the building at least 30 minutes before and after the group. Art Angel runs workshops for 40 weeks per year. We divide the year into 8-week blocks of workshops with a 2 week break in between. 

Fee: £55 per 2-hour weekly workshop, including prep.

Art Angel Tutors are employed on a freelance basis. You will be responsible for submitting invoices to us at the end of each block, paying your own tax and would need to be registered as self-employed. All Art Angel staff are required to join the PVG scheme.
